What prevents blood mixing in the heart?
Interatrial septum and interventricular septum
Are atria or ventricular walls thicker? Why?
Ventricular: responsible for pumping blood into the systemic and pulmonary circulations
What is the function of the right atrium? And where does the blood flow?
Receives deoxygenated blood from the superior vena cava, inferior vena cava, and the coronary sinus. The blood moves into the right ventricle
What is the function of the right ventricle?
Pumps deoxygenated blood into the pulmonary trunk
What is the function of the left atrium?
Receives oxygenated blood from the pulmonary veins
What is the function of the left ventricle?
Pumps oxygenated blood into the aorta
Is the right or left ventricle thicker? Why?
Left ventricle: it needs to contract with more force to send blood throughout systemic circulation
What is systemic circulation?
Supplies tissues and organs of the body with oxygenated blood
What is meant by syncytium of the heart?
Ventricular and atrial: the presence of intercalated discs allows cardiac muscle cells to conduct electrical impulses, this causes a group of muscle cells to contract in unison as a unit.
What are the two types of cells in the heart wall?
Myocardial contractile cells and myocardial conducting cells
What is the cardiac conduction system?
Network of nodes, specialized cells, and electrical signals that keep your heart beating.
