The Latin noun from which the words hospital, hostel, hotel, and hospice are derived, meaning both "a guest or visitor" and "one who provides lodging or entertainment for a guest or visitor."
Hospital (WHO 1957 Definition)
An integral part of a medical and social organization, whose function is to provide complete health care, both curative and preventive, and whose outpatient services reach out to the family and its home environment.
Hippocrates
Known as the "Father of Medicine" (460−370 BC), he utilized a rational non-religious approach to medicine.
Susruta
Known as the Father of Surgery (6th century BC), he was an ancient Indian surgeon known for pioneering operations and the influential treatise Sushruta-samhita.
Charaka
A principal contributor to Ayurveda and editor of the medical treatise entitled Charaka Samhita, a foundational text of classical Indian medicine.
AYUSH
Acronym for the popular indigenous healthcare traditions in India: Ayurveda, Yoga, Unani, Siddha, and Homeopathy.
Sub-Centres
The institutional basis of primary health care in rural areas, typically employing 1−2 workers and providing essential services for up to 5000 individuals.
Primary Health Centres (PHC)
A referral unit for a cluster of six sub-centres, typically serving 30000 people with approximately 4 to 6 inpatient beds.
Community Health Centres (CHC)
The secondary sector of the Indian health care system serving four PHCs (120000 people), required to have at least 30 beds, an operating theatre, and a laboratory.
Intramural Function
Services provided within the walls of a hospital, categorized into restorative, preventive, educational, and research functions.
Extramural Function
Services provided by the hospital outside its walls, such as outpatient services, home care, mobile clinics, and medical care camps.
Tertiary Care
The most advanced level of care providing super-specialty services in fields like Cardiac, Neuro, and Cancer, typically found in medical college hospitals.
Nosocomial Infection
Also known as a hospital-acquired infection (HAI), it is an infection acquired in a health care facility 48 hours after admission or up to 3 days after discharge.
Triage
The process in the Emergency department intended to "sort" patients to provide optimum care based on their medical need and efficient resource utilization.
Medico Legal Case (MLC)
A case made based on a patient's condition involving unnatural causes of injury, such as accidents or assault, requiring registration in a specific register and police notification.
CRM (Healthcare)
Customer Relationship Management; software used to manage patient databases, medical history, appointments, and prescriptions securely.
ESI Scheme
Established in 1948, the Employees' State Insurance Scheme provides cash and medical benefits to workers drawing wages not exceeding Rs. 21000 per month.
TPA (Third Party Administrator)
An agency holding a license from IRDA to process insurance claims and provide cashless facilities as an intermediary between the insurer and the insured.
Autoclaving
A sterilization method using steam under pressure at a temperature of 121oC under 15 psi of pressure for 20 minutes.

Dialysis
