SOP PERSONNEL-01
The Standard Operational Procedure governing the Uniform Policy and Personal Appearance for Career Personnel in the Baltimore County Fire Department.
Class ‘A’ Uniform
The Dress Uniform consisting of a blouse coat, dress trousers, long sleeve button-down shirt, regulation hat, black tie, and optional topcoat.
Class ‘B’ Uniform
A duty uniform including dress, staff, or fatigue pants; short or long sleeve button-down shirts; and the 3-in-1 fatigue jacket.
Class ‘C’ Uniform
A station wear option allowing members to purchase approved items like golf shirts, BDU/tactical pants, shorts, and job shirts at their own expense.
3-in-1 Fatigue Jacket
A department-issued Blauer style coat that serves as a thermal/weather garment for Class B and C uniforms.
Honor Guard Uniform
A specialized version of the Class A uniform featuring tuxedo stripe pants, white shirts, gold hat roping, and specific rocker patches.
Lieutenant Rank Insignia
Rank-specific identification consisting of silver embroidery and silver bugle collar pins.
Captain and Above Rank Insignia
Rank-specific identification consisting of gold embroidery and gold bugle collar pins.
Job Shirt
An individually purchased navy blue garment (with or without hood, full or 1/4 zip) featuring specific BCoFD embroidery and rank insignia requirements.
Golf Shirt
A navy blue (for most ranks) or white (for Chief Officers) shirt permitted in the Class C uniform, featuring embroidered patches and optional name/rank details.
Fatigue Pants
Navy blue, wash-and-wear style pants issued by the Logistics Bureau for duty use.
BDU/Tactical Style Pants
Navy blue pants with flat style thigh pockets, purchased at the member's expense for the Class C uniform.
Safety Shoe
Department-issued or approved footwear that must be securely fastened, provide ankle support, and meet ASTM F-2413 standards.
Patent Leather Shoes
Black, highly polished shoes permitted for wear with the Class A uniform or by staff/support members in Class B uniform.
Name Plate
A department-issued identification device worn on the right breast of shirts and blouse coats; positioned two inches below the large lapel point on the blouse coat.
Commendation Awards
Awards earned by members, worn on the Class A uniform centered 1/4 inch above the name plate.
Grooming Hair Standard
Hair must not fall below the eyebrows and its bulk/style must not interfere with PPE, including SCBA facepieces and helmets.
Sideburns
Facial hair that must be neatly trimmed, end with a clean-shaven horizontal line, and not extend below the tragus (middle of the ear).
Mustache Standard
Facial hair that must be neatly trimmed and not come in contact with the sealing surface of the SCBA facepiece (approximately 1/2 inch from the chin line).
Fingernail Length Standard
Natural fingernails must be trimmed so they do not extend beyond 1/4 inch of the tip of the finger.
Tattoo Policy
Prohibits markings that are obscene, extremist, supremacist, or advocate discrimination, with company commanders responsible for determining if they must be covered.
Retired Class A Uniform
A uniform maintained at the member's expense upon retirement, featuring a specific retirement patch and retiree badges.
Suspension Disposition
The immediate requirement for a member to turn in all badges, collar pins, insignia, name plates, ID cards, and PAT tags.
Operative IQ
The web-based system used by members to order uniform items issued by the Logistics Bureau.
ASTM F-2413
The safety standard that all alternative or approved safety shoes must meet for use in the department.
