Purpose of the Co-op approach
Client centered, performance based, problem solving approach that enables skill acquisition through a process of strategy use and guided discover
What is the main objective for the co-op approach?
Skill acquisition, cognitive strategy use (Goal-plan-do-check), generalization, transfer
What population uses the co-op approach?
- Originally developed for children with DCD, but now benefits individuals across lifespan
- Research shows it to be effective with TBI, stroke, and age-related changes to executive functioning.
Multicontext approach purpose
Metacognitive strategy intervention that provides guidelines for facilitating and training strategy use, self-awareness, self-monitoring, and self-regulatory skills.
Multicontext approach population
Children, adolescents and adults with subtle or mild cognitive deficits.
Key aspects of the multicontext approach
- Focus on developing, generating, selecting, or using strategies to cope with and manage cognitive performance
- Progress clients to be able to transfer and generalize skills
- Use of guided questions to promote EF
Goals of the Multicontext approach
- Promote understanding of cognitive strengths and weaknesses
- Increase a client's ability to anticipate, detect, or correct errors and continue to self-check and monitor performance
- Helps client to effectively use cognitive strategies
Spaced retrieval purpose
Intervention used to enhance memory for specific pieces of information for individuals with memory impairment.
How can you apply spaced retrieval?
Ask the client to remember information for increasingly longer time intervals - as intervals increase then add activities between the retrievals
Spaced retrieval population
- people with memory challenges such as those caused by dementia, stroke, or brain injury
- mild cognitive impairment
Errorless learning purpose
Rehabilitation strategy that helps clients learn or re-learn skills without making mistakes during the learning process
What are 4 reasons in which you would use errorless learning?
1. Have difficulty recognizing or correcting mistakes
2. Unable to retain feedback from trial and error methods
3. Demonstrates impaired memory, attention, or insight
4. Needs consistent, structured practice for habit formation
Population for errorless learning
Cognitive impairments, Memory loss, or Executive dysfunction:
- TBI
- Stroke
- Dementia
- Schizophrenia
- DID
Purpose of the positive approach to care
- Helps to support individuals with dementia by adapting communication, interactions with others, and the environment.
- This intervention is compensatory and focuses a lot on caregiver training, maintaining relationships through connection, and retaining skills.
Population of the positive approach to care
Individuals with dementia or other brain changes (Lewy body, pick's disease, Parkinson's, Korsakoff syndrome, HIV, Huntington's) and their caregivers.
Decription of the positive approach to care
- The therapist will use the PAC intervention to help with connection and engagement.
- Therapist will use hand under hand technique to guide and help with the movement.
- A positive physical approach is also used to pause, gesture, make eye contact, approach, shake hands, move, and get to eye level.
- Being supportive and validating emotions is very important in this approach.
