Taxonomy
The science of classification of organisms.
Phylogeny
The study of evolutionary history and relationships among organisms.
Taxonomic Hierarchy
A system that divides organisms into broad categories down to specific categories.
Three Domain System
A classification system proposed by Carl Woese that includes the domains Bacteria, Archaea, and Eukarya.
Eukaryotes
Organisms whose cells have a nucleus enclosed within membranes.
Species
A group of organisms that can interbreed and produce fertile offspring.
Genus
A category in taxonomy that is more inclusive than species, encompassing one or more species.
Polyphyletic
A group that does not include the most recent common ancestor of its members.
Serological tests
Tests that look for the ability of an organism to interact with specific antibodies.
NAATs
Nucleic Acid Amplification Tests used for detecting microbial DNA in a sample.
