Lymphoid System
Works to defend the body from pathogens such as viruses, bacteria, fungi, and parasites.
Pathogens
Microscopic organisms that cause disease.
Lymphocytes
Cells that are part of the immune response, identifying and attacking specific pathogens.
Lymph
A fluid similar to plasma but does not contain plasma proteins.
Lymphatic Vessels
Vessels that carry lymph from peripheral tissues to the venous system.
Thymus
An organ where T cells mature, located in the mediastinum.
Spleen
An organ that filters blood, removes abnormal blood cells, and initiates immune responses.
Nonspecific Defenses
General defense mechanisms that protect against a wide range of pathogens.
Specific Defenses
Targeted immune responses developed after exposure to specific pathogens.
Interferons
Small proteins released by virus-infected cells that interfere with viral replication.
MHC Proteins
Major Histocompatibility Complex proteins that present antigens on cell surfaces.
B cells
A type of lymphocyte that produces antibodies in response to antigens.
T cells
Lymphocytes responsible for cell-mediated immunity, including helper and cytotoxic functions.
Antibodies
Proteins produced by B cells that neutralize or eliminate antigens.
Primary Response
The initial immune response upon first exposure to an antigen.
Secondary Response
The more robust and rapid immune response upon subsequent exposures to the same antigen.
Macrophages
Large phagocytic cells that engulf and destroy pathogens.
Natural Killer Cells
A type of lymphocyte that attacks and destroys abnormal cells such as cancer cells.
Inflammation
A localized immune response triggered by cell injury or infection.
