Hemispatial neglect
Damage to the brain leads to a lack of attention or visual awareness, most commonly due to a stroke in the right hemisphere.
Capgras delusion
Belief that an impostor has replaced a known person, often seen in schizophrenia or dementia.
Fregoli delusion
Belief that different people are a single person changing appearance; linked to traumatic brain injuries.
Alien hand syndrome
A condition where a limb acts independently, often due to damage to the frontal lobe.
Cotard’s syndrome
Belief that one is dead or does not exist, often co-occurring with psychiatric or neurological symptoms.
Functional integration
The process where various brain regions work together to interpret and respond to stimuli.
Retinal ganglion cells
Cells that aggregate information from photoreceptors and have receptive fields sensitive to changes in light.
Retinotopic mapping
The organization of visual information such that adjacent ganglion cells map onto adjacent cells in the LGN.
Primary visual cortex (V1)
Area of the brain that processes visual input and contains neurons responding to more complex stimuli.
Cones
Photoreceptors in the retina responsible for color vision and function best in bright lighting.
Rods
Photoreceptors in the retina that provide night vision and are more sensitive to low light levels.
LGN (Lateral Geniculate Nucleus)
A relay station in the thalamus that processes visual information before it reaches the cortex.
