What is the primary function of building foundations?
Foundations form the base of a building and transfer its weight safely to the ground to prevent uneven settling, cracking, and structural failure.
What factors determine the type and depth of a foundation?
Soil type, building weight, and the purpose of the structure.
According to building code requirements, what must foundations be able to carry and transfer?
They must safely carry and transfer both dead and imposed loads, including horizontal and inclined forces, without surpassing material stress limits.
Which recognized standard is mentioned for the structural use of reinforced concrete in buildings?
British Standard Code of Practice BS8110.
What is a strip foundation?
A continuous strip of concrete laid beneath load-bearing walls that distributes the weight of the wall evenly.
In what type of structures are strip foundations typically used?
Smaller buildings, such as houses, where the soil is stable and strong.
According to the strip foundation diagram, what is the minimum depth required for the excavated trench?
Not less than 1m.
What are the advantages of using a strip foundation?
It is easy to construct, requires less concrete than raft foundations, and is ideal for lightweight structures.
What is a pad foundation?
A thick square or rectangular concrete block positioned beneath individual columns to spread the load over a wider area.
Where are pad foundations commonly used?
In framed structures where columns carry most of the load.
What is a raft foundation?
A solid concrete slab covering the entire footprint of a building, reducing stress on the soil by distributing weight over a large area.
When is a raft foundation preferred over other types?
When constructing large or heavy buildings or when soil conditions are weak.
What is a foundation plan?
A technical drawing that illustrates the shape, size, and location of a building's foundations, serving as a guide for excavation and construction.
How are foundation walls represented on a technical plan?
They are represented as thick solid lines.
What do dashed or dotted lines on a foundation plan signify?
Centre lines, which mark the exact center of walls and foundations to help set out the building accurately.
What are 'strip footings' on a plan?
Parallel lines around the walls that are usually wider than the wall itself.
What information does a section drawing provide in a foundation plan?
A side view of the foundation trench that illustrates the depth and arrangement of materials.
What purpose do 'level marks' serve on a construction plan?
They indicate the finished level of the foundation or the depth to which excavation should be carried out.
