first function of management - planning
What is it and what are it’s three steps?
deciding what to do before you start doing it
set clear goals
choose a path
commit resources
What two companies carried out the planning phase successfully/unsuccessfully
Netflix: set a goal (killed DVD business before someone else did) and chose a new streaming path (streaming + originals) and committed the resources
Blockbuster: turned down a chance to buy Netflix, optimized late fees, didn’t set a goal or clear path nor did they commit to change

What are two examples of when the controlling principle of management DID and DIDN’T work?
DID WORK: Toyota andon cord is able to be pulled by any worker to stop the line the moment they spot a defect - small problems were surfaced before recalls were made
DIDN’T WORK: the Boeing 737 MAX plane had flagged risks by the engineers, but managers decided to release it anyway - two crashes, 346 deaths, and 20 month grounding
What are the types of managers?
Top, Middle, First Line, Team Leaders
What do Top Managers do and what is their horizon?
Set overall direction, create a context for change, build employee commitment, shape a positive culture through words/actions, monitor business environment
horizon: 3-5 years
What do middle managers do and what is their horizon?
Turn strategy into action, plan and allocate resources to meet objectives, coordinate and link groups/departments, monitor subunit performance, implement top management’s strategy
horizon: 6-18 months
What do First Line Managers do and what is their horizon?
Manage entry-level workers, teach and train, encourage, monitor and reward performance, make schedules and operating plans
horizon: 2 weeks
What do team leaders do and what is their horizon?
Facilitate team activities, foster healthy internal and external relationships
horizon: daily

Canadian management theorist who identified 10 specific roles managers take and categorized them into three subunits

American engineer who worked at Steel mill during Industrial Revolution that created scientific management - measured every task with a stopwatch to find the “best way” to do things and train workers at that standard

Who was Henry Gantt and what did he do?
American engineer who worked at still mill alongside Taylor who applied scientific management to factory setting through creation of the Gantt Chart - plan was to make work visible so it would be easier to do
Examples of the Gantt chart being helpful
helped during WW1 shipbuilding, the creation of the Hoover Dam, every modern project plan (Microsoft Project, Asana, Smartsheet…)

Created bureaucratic management: “Authority based on knowledge, expertise, or experience - not favoritism”
What is the bureaucracy paradox?
The fact that despite bureaucracy is meant to represent fairness and efficiency, it often sounds like an insult that isn’t fair (ex: registering for a class, renewing driver’s license, applying for financial aid…)
