Nasal Cavity
main entry for air that filters, warms, & humidifies air as it enters the body through the nose & goes to the lungs
Oral Cavity
2nd entry for air during high intensity exercise or if the nose is blocked that DOES NOT filter, humidify, or warm air on its way to the lungs
Epiglottis
small flap of connective tissue that prevents food & liquid from entering the trachea
Right Lung
3 lobes (upper lobe, middle lobe, & lower lobe), largest lung that facilitates gas exchange of taking in oxygen & releasing carbon dioxide, blood oxygenation, waste removal, & protection
Diaphragm
primary muscle responsible for respiration by contracting to pull down the lungs during inhalation & relaxing during exhalation, changes air pressure in the lungs
Alveoli
facilitate gas exchange through the lungs & bloods to exchange oxygen & carbon dioxide during respiration
Bronchioles
small airway that delivers oxygen to the alveoli for gas exchange
Bronchi
carry oxygen to and from the lungs
Left Lung
2 lobes (upper & lower lobes), facilitate gas exchange, filter air, regulate pH, & structure
Trachea
primary passageway for air to travel between lungs & the naval/oral cavity, mucus membrane traps dust particles & moistens/humidifies air
Larynx
facilitates breathing, creates vocal sounds, & prevents food/foreign particles from entering the airway
Pharynx
passageway for air & food
Sphenoidal Sinus
helps to humidify & warm air, trap & flushes out germs
