Carrying a Microscope
The proper transport method where the microscope is held upright in front of you with one hand grasping the arm and the other hand supporting the base.

Compound Microscope
A microscope that utilizes multiple lenses (including ocular and objective lenses) to view specimens at the cellular and tissue levels.
Base
The bottom portion of the microscope that houses the on/off switch and the substage lamp.
Arm
The structural support rising from the base that connects the head to the base and serves as a handle for carrying.
Ocular Lens (Eyepiece)
The lens located at the upper end of the head with a standard magnification of 10× (ranging from 8× to 12×).
Revolving Nosepiece
A rotatable structure attached to the head that holds different objective lenses and rotates to bring them into position above the specimen.
Diopter Adjustment Ring
A fine focus adjustment mechanism near the eyepiece that enables individual focus adjustments for users with vision differences between eyes.
Scanning Objective Lens
The shortest objective lens with a magnification of 4× to 6×, used for initial slide viewing and overview.
Low-Power Objective Lens
The intermediate-length objective lens with a magnification of 10×, allowing a closer view of the slide than scanning power.
High-Power Objective Lens
The longest standard objective lens with a magnification typically between 40× and 60×, providing detailed specimen viewing.
Oil Immersion Objective Lens
An objective lens with 100× magnification requiring a drop of immersion oil to prevent blurriness and achieve maximum resolution.
Stage
The flat platform on which a microscope slide is placed for observation.
Mechanical Stage
A device on the stage operated by adjustment knobs that allows precise horizontal and vertical movement of the slide.
Field of View
The entire visible circular area seen when looking through the ocular lens.
Condenser
A lens mechanism located beneath the stage that delivers a concentrated beam of light onto the specimen.
Diaphragm
An adjustable structure within the condenser (also called iris diaphragm) that regulates the amount of light reaching the specimen slide.
Coarse-Adjustment Knob
The larger-diameter knob used to move the mechanical stage up and down in large increments for initial rough focus.
Fine-Adjustment Knob
The smaller, central knob used to move the mechanical stage in small increments for precise, sharp focus.
Magnification
An apparent increase in the physical appearance or size of a specimen, distinct from its actual physical dimensions.
Resolution
The optical capability to distinguish two closely adjacent objects as separate and distinct entities.
Resolving Power
A function of lens design and light wavelength that determines optical detail, where shorter blue light wavelengths yield maximum resolution.
Contrast
The intensity difference in darkness between the background and the specimen being observed.
Phase Contrast Microscope
A specialized microscope designed to view transparent or colorless specimens by enhancing structural contrast.
Total Magnification Formula
Total Magnification=Magnification of the Objective Lens×Magnification of the Eyepiece
Depth of Field
The thickness of the focal plane that remains in sharp focus at one time when observing a slide.
Histology
The biological field of study focused on the microscopic structure and organization of tissues.
Basement Membrane
An acellular and avascular protein structure that anchors epithelial cells to underlying connective tissue.
Stratified Squamous Epithelium
A tissue composed of multiple layers of flattened cells that functions in protecting underlying tissues from mechanical stress and pathogens.
Areolar Connective Tissue
A connective tissue consisting of cells and fibers within an extracellular matrix that serves as packing material to hold internal structures in place.
