What was a 1st failure of the league in border disputes (Poland-Lithuania)
in 1920 vilna was the new capital of lithuania but it had a mostly polish population. So a polish army recaptured the city. France refused to upset a possible future ally against Germany and Britain could not act effectively on it’s own.
Why is the poland-lithuania situation particularly important?
in 1923 because lithuania saw the failure of the league, they seized the german port of Memel, something that the league was forced to accept.

in 1923, an Italian General (Tellini) was ambushed and killed on the greek side of the border between greece and Albania. Mussolini demanded compensation and execution of the murderes, and then attacked and occupied corfu. greece appealed to the league and at first italy was condemned and it was accepted that they should be payed if the murderes were caught. mussolini pressured the league and then greece were forced to pay compensation

in 1931 the japanese set up an explosion on a railway in manchuria to justify invading china. the league told to japan to withdraw, which japan ignored and continued. the league set up a commission of inquiry which took well over 6 months and was not published until late 1932. Japan just left the league in 1933

America was Japans main trading partner and the league could not economically sanction japan without them. the league also did not have its own army
