the heart
muscular organ that is controlled by electrical impulses
Chamber of the heart
1- Right atrium: receives deoxygenated blood from the body than
2- the right ventricle: pumps the deoxygenated blood to the lungs
3- left atrium: receives the oxygenated blood from the lungs to the heart
4- left ventricle: pumps oxygenated blood to the body (thicker than right)
Hypertension
too much pressure is being exerted on the blood vessels causing them to weaken
Hypotension
have trouble maintaining enough pressure in the blood vessels to complete the entire circuit of blood flow
thermoregulation
The self-regulated mechanism by which mammals maintain body temperature
What can affect homeostasis
-High blood sugar: impacting insulin levels
-Caffeine: acts as a stimulant (increases heart rate) and a diuretic (increases urine production)
the heart is a _____ ______. which are called___ ______
Double pump // two circulations (pulmonary and systematic)
pulmonary circuit
Heart pumps oxygen-poor blood to lungs. Oxygen is taken up (inhalation). Carbon dioxide released (exhalation). Oxygen-rich blood returns to heart
Systematic Circuit
Heart pumps oxygen-rich blood to all tissues in the body. Carbon Dioxide (waste) is absorbed from the tissue. Oxygen-poor blood returns to heart
Heart attacks
When blood flow is blocked or severely reduced (coronary arteries)
systole
heart contracts to pump blood out of the heart
diastole
the heart relaxes after contraction allowing the chambers to fill with blood
blood pressure (systole and diastole)
high blood pressure occurs when too much pressure is on the blood vessels often caused by narrowing of the blood vessels (due to plaque formation)
healthy blood pressure number
120/80
which tools did we use in class
scalpel and probe
To reduce heat loss (keep heat in) (thermoregulation)
Blood vessels near the skin can constrict to reduce blood flow
To dissipate (get rid of) heat (thermoregulation)
the vessels dilate to increase blood flow in the skin.
