Hydrosphere
All the liquid, solid, and gaseous water on Earth, spanning oceans, rivers, ice, and vapor.
Lithosphere
The solid, rocky outer layer of the Earth, including the crust and upper mantle, frequently called the geosphere.
Atmosphere
The blanket of gases that surrounds the Earth, mainly composed of 78% nitrogen and 21% oxygen.
Biosphere
The global ecological system integrating all living beings and their relationships, extending from ocean trenches to mountain peaks.
Saline Water Distribution
Oceans cover 71% of the Earth and contain 97.5% of its water.
Hydrological (Water) Cycle
A gigantic system powered by energy from the Sun that describes the continuous exchange of moisture between the oceans, atmosphere, and land.
Evaporation
The process where the sun heats liquid water in oceans, lakes, and rivers, turning it into water vapor that rises into the sky.
Condensation
The process where water vapor rises, cools down, and turns back into liquid droplets to form clouds.
Precipitation
Water falling back to the ground in the form of rain, snow, sleet, or hail when cloud droplets become too heavy.
Collection (Accumulation)
The stage where fallen water collects in rivers, lakes, and oceans or gets absorbed into the ground.
Transpiration
The process where plants absorb water through roots and release it as vapor through leaves.
Infiltration
The process where water on the surface soaks directly into the soil.
Percolation
The downward movement of water through soil layers to fill underground aquifers.
Runoff
Extra rainwater that flows over the land surface into streams, rivers, and eventually oceans.
Sublimation
The process where solid ice or snow turns directly into water vapor, bypassing the liquid state.
Global Conveyor Belt
A deep-sea system powered by water density (temperature and salinity) where cold, dense polar water sinks to stabilize global climate.
Upwelling
Process where winds push deep, icy water to the surface, carrying nutrients that feed marine plants.
Watersheds
Areas where all rainfall and underground water drain into the exact same destination, like a single river or lake.
River systems
A continuous network of flowing water carrying essential nutrients and sediments from mountains to the sea.
Wetlands
Diverse ecosystems including marshes, swamps, fens, and bogs that absorb excess water during heavy rains to prevent flooding.
Aquifers
Underground layers of rock or soil that hold groundwater and provide roughly half of all global domestic water use.
Crust
The outermost, rigid, rocky, and thinnest layer of Earth, making up less than 1% of its mass.
Mantle
A layer of silicate rock between the crust and outer core making up about 68% of Earth’s mass.
Outer Core
A molten layer of liquid iron and nickel that lies above the inner core and generates the Earth's magnetic field.
Rock Cycle
A continuous geological process driven by internal heat and tectonic forces where igneous, sedimentary, and metamorphic rocks transform into one another.
Sedimentary Rock
Rock formed from compressed debris or chemical precipitation.
Metamorphic Rock
Rock that has been transformed by heat and pressure.
Igneous Rock
Rock that solidifies from molten material either deep underground or on the surface.
Pedology
The study of soil in its natural environment, focusing on formation (pedogenesis), morphology, and classification.
Soil Horizon O
The surface layer consisting of loose, highly decomposed organic matter.
Soil Horizon E
A layer lightened in color due to the removal (eluviation) of clays, organic matter, iron, or aluminum.
Soil Horizon B
The layer characterized by the deposition (illuviation) of materials like clays, iron, and aluminum; often shows color and structure development.
Greenhouse Gases
Gases including CO2, CH4, N2O, H2O, and O3 that trap infrared heat in the atmosphere.
Thermosphere
Atmospheric layer from 80 to 700km where temperature increases rapidly due to absorption of X-rays and UV radiation.
Mesosphere
Atmospheric layer from 50 to 80km reaching the absolute coldest temperatures; dense enough to disintegrate incoming meteors.
Stratosphere
Atmospheric layer from 12 to 50km containing the ozone layer which leads to temperature increases with altitude.
Troposphere
The lower atmosphere (0 to 12km) holding 85% of total mass and nearly all water vapor; where global weather patterns occur.
Greenhouse Effect
A natural process maintaining an average global temperature of 15∘C instead of −18∘C by trapping infrared heat.
Organism
The level of ecological organization representing a single living thing capable of carrying out all life processes independently.
Population
A group of individual organisms of the same species living and interacting in the same geographic area.
Community
All the interacting populations of different species living in the same area.
Ecosystem
A community of living beings (biotic factors) interacting with their non-living environment (abiotic factors).
Biome
A large community of flora and fauna adapted to a specific climate, made up of similar ecosystems across the globe.
