the french build forts in British Virginia to defend their fur trade. Washington is sent by Virginia governor to oust the french. Washington builds Fort Necessity. Washington’s troops and Native American allies scalp and defeat a French detachment. The French respond by wiping out Washington’s troops.

the colonists felt entitled to the land through birthright (plus many of them fought for it in the french and indian war). many of them expanded west anyway, as britain couldn’t really enforce the line anyway
