define self awareness

Self-awareness is the ability to recognize your own strengths, weaknesses, emotions, and habits, understand how they affect other people, and then adjust your behavior when necessary.”

For dentistry, the important part is that self-awareness isn’t just knowing yourself—it’s acting on what you recognize. A dentist needs to know when they are confident in something, when they need feedback, and when they should ask for help rather than letting pride interfere with patient care.

For you, a strong answer could be:

“To me, self-awareness means understanding both what I do well and where I still need to improve. But I think the most important part is being willing to act on that understanding. For example, I’ve realized that I sometimes take on too much or wait longer than I should before asking for help. Being aware of that has pushed me to communicate earlier and be more intentional about what I commit to. In dentistry, I think self-awareness is especially important because you need to recognize your own limitations, accept feedback, and know when to ask someone else for help in order to provide the best care for the patient.”

What is your thoughts of state-funded gambling?

“I can understand why states use lotteries as a source of revenue for public programs, but I also think there is an ethical concern because gambling can disproportionately affect people who may already be financially vulnerable. So if a state chooses to operate gambling, I think there should also be transparency about where the money goes and resources available for gambling addiction.”

Thomas Edison believed the future of medicine would focus on preventing disease rather than curing it. What are your thoughts, and how does this relate to dentistry?

I agree with the principle behind Edison's idea, although I don't think prevention will ever completely replace treatment. There will always be conditions we can't prevent, so we still need clinicians who can treat disease effectively. But ideally, healthcare should intervene before a problem becomes severe.

Sometimes the most valuable thing you can give a patient isn't a procedure — it's the knowledge that prevents them from needing one.

What does it mean to be an ambassador?

An ambassador is someone who understands that their behavior reflects not only on themselves, but also on the organization, profession, or community they represent.
