Brake Check Before a Journey

A check performed as you set off to ensure the brakes do not feel spongy or slack, and that the vehicle does not pull to one side.

Tyre Pressure Information and Checking Procedure

Information found in the manufacturer's guide; pressures should be checked and adjusted using a reliable pressure gauge when tyres are cold, including the spare tyre, and valve caps must be refitted.

Correct Head Restraint Adjustment

An adjustment where the rigid part of the head restraint is at least as high as the eye or top of the ears, and as close to the back of the head as is comfortable.

Tyre Tread Depth and Condition Requirements

Tyres must have no cuts and bulges, and must maintain a minimum of $1.6\text{ mm}$ of tread depth across the central ¾ of the breadth and around the entire outer circumference.

Headlights and Tail Lights Check

An explanation that you would operate the light switch (turning on the ignition if necessary) and walk around the vehicle to check the lights.

Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS) Fault Indication

A condition where a warning light illuminates to signal a fault with the anti-lock braking system.

Direction Indicators Check

An explanation that you would operate the indicator switch (turning on the ignition if necessary) and walk round the vehicle.

Brake Lights Check

An explanation that you would operate the brake pedal and make use of reflections in windows or doors, or ask someone to help check the lights.

Power Assisted Steering Check

A check where gentle pressure on the steering wheel maintained while starting the engine results in a slight but noticeable movement, or turning the steering wheel just after moving gives an immediate indication that power assistance is functioning.
