Alkenes
Unsaturated hydrocarbons that contain one or more carbon-carbon double bonds.
Geometric Isomers
Isomers that have the same molecular formula but differ in the spatial arrangement of their atoms, often refers to cis and trans forms.
C-C Double Bond
A type of covalent bond where two carbon atoms share two pairs of electrons; characteristic of alkenes.
Conjugation
A special pattern of alternating double and single bonds that leads to increased stability and unique properties in molecules.
Resonance
The phenomenon where certain molecules can be represented by two or more valid electron dot structures, showing the delocalization of electrons.
Saturated Hydrocarbons
Hydrocarbons in which all carbon atoms are fully bonded to hydrogen atoms, having no double or triple bonds.
Cis-Trans Isomerism
A form of stereoisomerism where the relative positions of functional groups are considered, affecting chemical properties.
Activation Energy
The minimum amount of energy required to initiate a chemical reaction.
Combustion Reaction
A chemical reaction that occurs when a hydrocarbon reacts with oxygen, producing carbon dioxide, water, and energy.
Structural Isomers
Compounds that have the same molecular formula but differ in the arrangement of atoms.
