Covalent Bond
A chemical bond that results from the sharing of electrons between atoms.
Molecule
Forms when two or more atoms covalently bond.
Polar Covalent Bond
A type of bond that forms when electrons are not shared equally between atoms.
VSEPR Model
A model used to determine molecular geometry or shape.
Valence Electrons
Electrons that are available for bonding when atoms combine to form a covalent compound.
Lewis Structure
A diagram that represents the arrangement of electrons in a molecule.
Bond Strength Order
Double bond (1), Triple bond (2), Single bond (3) in terms of strength.
Shared Electrons in Covalent Bonds
Single covalent bond shares 2 electrons, double shares 4, and triple shares 6.
Covalent Compound Example
Carbon dioxide (CO2) is formed by the covalent bonding of carbon and oxygen.
Shape of Water Molecule
The water molecule has a bent shape.
Electron Repulsion
According to the VSEPR model, electron pairs repel each other and arrange themselves in fixed positions.
