Qualitative observarions
Observations which are NOT measured using numbers ie. Color, texture odor
Quantitative observations
Observations which are measured using numbers ie. Mass, volue, temperature of a sample
Weight
Amount of force gravity puts on matter
Mass
Amount of space an object occupies
Density
Mass divided by volume (g/mL)
d = m/v
Volune
Length x width x height
Quantity
What is being measured
Base unit
Unit without a prefix (meter, literally, gram)
Scientific notation
A format in which a quantity is expressed as a number between 1 and 10 multiplied by a power of 10
Estimated digit
One digit read beyond the calibration of your measuring device
Calibration
Smallest increment on measuring device
Limitation
Estimate one number place past the smallest increment on the device
Accuracy
How close are value is to the true (actual value)
Precision
How close together are set of values are to one another
Leading zeros
Never significant
Captive zeros
Always significant
Lagging zeros
Only significant if there is a decimal point in the number
Mult/Div sig figs
Measurement with least number of sig figs determines the num of sig figs
Add sub. Sig figs
The answer is expressed to the same number place as the least precise measurement
Exact numbers
Have infinite sig figs
