Leadership
The ability to influence a group toward the achievement of a vision or set of goals.
Trait theories of leadership
Focus on personal qualities and characteristics that differentiate leaders from nonleaders.
Important personality traits of good leaders
Assertiveness (extroversion), Conscientiousness, Creativity and Flexibility
Emotional Intelligence (EI) and Leadership
People high in EI are more likely to emerge as leaders, particularly empathy.
Behavioral Theories of Leadership
Imply we can train people to be leaders and focus on behaviors like initiating structure and consideration.
The Fiedler contingency model
Effective group performance depends on matching the leader's style with the degree of control the situation gives the leader.
Situational leadership theory (SLT)
Successful leadership is achieved by selecting the right leadership style contingent on the followers' readiness.
Leader-Participation Model
Relates leadership behavior and participation in decision-making, leader behavior must adjust to task structure.
Shared Leadership Theory
Leadership can be enacted by a collective.
Charismatic Leadership
Includes visionary and crisis-responsive leadership.
Key Characteristics of Charismatic Leaders
Vision and articulation, personal risk-taking, sensitivity to follower needs, and unconventional behavior.
Transformational Leadership
Focuses on inspiring followers with a compelling vision and builds upon transactional leadership.
The Dark Side of Charismatic Leadership
Leaders act in their own interests and override organizational goals and narcissistic tendencies.
Authentic Leadership
Leaders who know who they are, what they believe in, and act on those values openly and candidly.
Servant Leadership
Leaders focus on helping followers grow and develop.
Abusive Supervision
A supervisor is hostile in their verbal and nonverbal behavior.
Trust
A psychological state of vulnerability based on positive expectations.
Neutralizers and Substitutes for Leadership
Situations and factors that negate or replace the need for leader influence.
Mentoring
Career and psychological functions to help the protégé
