Non Random Sampling

target a specific group rather than doing a random selection

2
New cards

Quota Sampling

Researcher decides how many of each category of people should be included in the sample and rather than selecting them randomly the researcher goes out to hunt them down
for example in a sample of 500 people if only 22 are aged between 30 and 40 the researcher will go and grab 22 women
This lacks randomness though so there's gonna be bias

3
New cards

Purposive Sampling

Researchers choose individuals that fit the research. The researcher will choose a particular place because it has what they are looking for. e.g you want to research romanians so you go to chalvey
Actual example: Goldthorpe's study went to middle class places

4
New cards

Opportunity Sampling

Literally the same thing as purposive idk why they had to name it something different
it basically means making the most out of situations where the research population is likely to be found e.g the romanians again

5
New cards

Snowball Sampling

Mainly used when researchers find it hard to get access to a certain group
Involves finding one person who fits the research needs and then getting that person to suggest someone else who would want to participate

6
New cards

Volunteer Sampling

Sociologists advertise for research volunteers on media
Only problem is that those interested may not fit the research criteria

7
New cards

Bagguley and Hussain (2007)

Used purposive sampling to research asians and then used snowball sampling to create a "widening participation"
