Modern Art
A shift of style away from teh academic style, started with the birth of modernism (industrial revolution, 1760-1840).
Impressionism
Subjects show everyday life of ordinary people and shows how objects reacted with light
Captures the fleeting moment, done in open air.
Uses pure colors of paint dabbed on canvas, displays quick, spontaneous and loose brushstrokes
Post-Impressionism
Adapted the impressionist style and combined it with emphasis on geometric forms.
Creation of distortions of expressive effect and, utilization of unnatural and indiscriminate colors
Expressionism
Communicates personal feelings to the subject rather than just painting what they see
Artist’ message is more important than the realistic depiction of the subject
Uses impasto (thick application of paints), and loose brushstrokes with strong and unnatural colors
Cubism
Inspired by the geometric style and composition of Paul Cezanne
First abstract style of modern art
showcases objects from multiple points of view and at different timesl concentrated on 2D surgace and rejected linear perspective
Dadaism
Formed as a negative reaction to the horrors of the First world war.
Art, poetry, and performance produced by this style are often satirical and nonsensical in nature.
Surrealism
It was influenced by the works of psychologist Sigmund Freud, who said that dreams were our subconscious way of dealing with personal issues and realities
Representational Surrealism
Type of surrealism where the realistic depiction of objects but is set or distorted beyond the capabilities of reality
Abstract Surrealism
Type of surrealism based on shapes and forms that does not represent anything found in real life
Abstract Expressionism
It emphasizes abstract elements of art stressing on feelings and emotions rather than perceivable subject matter.
Op Art
It uses scientific knowledge about vision to enable artist to create movement through optical illusion, with the arrangement of lines and complementary colors
