Electric potential difference
The work done to move a unit charge from one point to the other in an electric circuit carrying some current, defined by the ratio V=QW.
Volt (V)
The SI unit of electric potential difference, named after the Italian physicist Alessandro Volta (1745-1827).
1 Volt
The potential difference between two points in a current-carrying conductor when 1 joule of work is done to move a charge of 1 coulomb from one point to the other (1 V=1 C1 J).
Potential Difference Formula
V=QW, where V is the potential difference, W is the work done, and Q is the charge.
Battery
A device consisting of one or more electric cells that generates potential difference across its terminals through chemical action to set charges in motion.
Voltmeter
An instrument used to measure the electric potential difference, which is always connected in parallel across the points to be measured.
Ammeter
An instrument used to measure electricity.
Resistor
An instrument used to measure resistance.
Alessandro Volta
The Italian physicist (1745-1827) after whom the unit of electric potential is named.
Electric Pressure
An analogy used for potential difference, which causes electrons to move along a conductor, similar to how a pressure difference causes water to flow.
