Define Tissues
Group of similar cells organized to work together to form a specific function
Four primary tissues types
Epithelial tissue, Connective tissue, Muscle tissue, Nervous tissue
Steps involved in preparing tissue for microscopic viewing
Fixed, Sectioned, Stained
Epithelial tissue and where to find
Forms boundaries between different environments, protects, secretes, absorbs, filters, lines hollow organs, glands, skin surface
Muscle tissue and where to find
Contracts so movement can happen, bones, heart, walls of hollow organs
Nervous tissue and where to find
Communication, brain, spinal cord, nerves
Connective tissue and where to find
Supports and proects tissues and binds them together, bones, tendons
Apical surface
border that faces outside of body or cavity of an internal organ
Microvilli
On the apical surface, extends plasma membrane and increases exposed surface area
Cilia
On the apical surface, propels substances along apical surface
Basal surface
Attached to underlying connective tissue, noncellular thin layer of supporting sheet made of glycoprotiens
Simple epithelia
Single cell layer, found where absorption, secretion, and filtration happen
Stratified epithelia
Made of two or more cell layers stacked on top of each other, found in high-abrasion areas where protection needed
Squamous cells
Flattened and scale like
Cuboidal Cells
Cube shaped, as tall as they are wide
Columnar Cells
Tall and column shaped
