• Iceland - thriving tourist economy & people spend significant amounts of £ to visit the tectonically active island.

Positive place perception & emotional attachment of hazardous locations?

• Mount Merapi - fertile soils for good farming.

• Merapi = culturally significant in Indonesia.

• Fertile soils & cultural and spiritual significance is why ppl choose to live in tectonically active location.

• Emotional attachment.

Negative perception of hazardous location?

• Nepal earthquake (2015)

• Damaged place perception for tourists due to avalanches on Everest base camp 7 destruction of many temples in Kathmandu.

• Country had poor ability to cope with chaos & destruction - negative impact on perception.

How did Mount Ontake damage place perception for tourists?

• 2014: Ski resort damaged/people on mountain when eruption happened.

• People lost trust in monitoring & warning systems on mountain.
