Homeostasis
The process of maintaining internal balance within the body.
Sensory Receptors
Specialised structures in the body that detect changes or stimuli in the internal or external environment.
Stimulus-Response Model
A pathway describing how a stimulus is detected by a receptor, leading to processing and a resulting response.
Feedback Loops
Biological mechanisms used to maintain homeostasis by responding to changes in conditions such as body temperature and blood glucose levels.
Central Nervous System
A major division of the nervous system consisting of the brain and spinal cord that receives, processes, and sends information.
Peripheral Nervous System
A division of the nervous system that connects the central nervous system to the limbs and organs.
Somatic Nervous System
A subdivision of the peripheral nervous system responsible for voluntary control of body movements.
Autonomic Nervous System
A subdivision of the peripheral nervous system that regulates involuntary bodily functions.
Reflex Arc
A neural pathway that controls an immediate, automatic response to a stimulus.
Endocrine System
A body system comprising glands that produce and secrete hormones to regulate various body functions.
Sexual Reproduction
A mode of reproduction involving the combination of genetic material from two parent organisms to produce offspring.
Asexual Reproduction
A mode of reproduction involving a single parent organism that produces offspring genetically identical to itself.
Internal Fertilisation
A type of fertilisation in animal reproduction where the sperm and egg meet inside the body of a parent.
External Fertilisation
A type of fertilisation in animal reproduction where sperm and egg unite outside the body of the parents.
