Normality
The state of having thoughts, feelings, and behaviours that are considered common and acceptable
Abnormality
The state of deviating from the norm, usually in a way that is undesirable
Neurotypicality
The concept of normality applied to neurological functioning; being neurologically typical
Neurodiversity
Variations in neurological development and functioning within and between people, including conditions such as autism; natural brain variation in society
Neurodivergence
An umbrella term for neurological differences that diverge from typical development, arising from genetic, environmental, or experiential factors
Socio-cultural approach
A view of normality where what is normal is determined by social and cultural codes and context
Functional approach
Normality is defined by the ability to cope with the demands of everyday life
Historical approach
What is considered normal changes across different historical periods
Medical approach
Abnormality is due to underlying biological causes and is diagnosed by symptoms
Statistical approach
Normality is based on how the majority of people think, feel, and behave
Situational approach
Normality depends on what is acceptable in different contexts or situations
Adaptive behaviour
Behaviour that helps an individual cope effectively with their environment
Maladaptive behaviour
Behaviour that hinders functioning or adaptation
Personal distress
The experience of distress by an individual, often considered in assessing atypical behaviour
Culturally responsive practices
Mental health practices that are sensitive and responsive to an individual's cultural context
