Racism
• When an individual or organisation with race-based societal power discriminates, excludes, or disadvantages a person because of their race, colour, descent, nationality, ethnicity, religion and/or immigrant status
• Racism can be systemic or interpersonal, unconscious or conscious, active or passive, obvious or subtle
Racism results in:
• Poor health and increased chance of developing chronic disease
• Unequal access & treatment
• People not accessing treatment
• Marginalisation & social exclusion
• Psychological stress/distress
• Spiritual and psychic harm (feelings of self doubt, frustration and flattened confidence)
• Soul-woundedness; racialized bodily trauma i.e. lack of hope, connectedness, cultural wellbeing, belonging
