Body Composition
The relative amount of body fat to fat-free mass (FFM).
Fat-Free Mass (FFM)
The body’s nonfat tissues, which include bone, water, muscle, connective tissue, organ tissues, and teeth.
Essential Fat
Fats incorporated in various tissues of the body, critical for normal body functioning.
Subcutaneous Fat
Fat stored under the skin.
Visceral Fat
Fat stored around major organs.
Female Athlete Triad
A condition consisting of disordered eating, amenorrhea (lack of menstrual periods), and decreased bone density.
Body Mass Index (BMI)
A measure of relative body weight correlating highly with measures of body fat.
Android Obesity
Body fat distribution characterized by an apple shape, where fat is primarily stored in the abdominal area.
Gynoid Obesity
Body fat distribution characterized by a pear shape, where fat is primarily stored in the hips and thighs.
Underwater Weighing
The gold standard for estimating body fat by submerging an individual and calculating body composition through water displacement.
Bioelectrical Impedance Analysis (BIA)
A method that measures the body's resistance to a small electrical current to estimate body composition.
Somatotype
A classification of body shapes: endomorphs (round/pear shaped), mesomorphs (lean/muscular), and ectomorphs (thin/linear).
