Isotope
Atoms of the same element that have different numbers of neutrons.
Chemical Bond
A force that holds atoms together, typically formed by gaining, losing, or sharing electrons.
Stable Atom
An atom that generally has 8 electrons in its outermost valence shell.
Ionic Bond
A type of chemical bond where electrons are transferred between atoms.
Ion
An atom that has an electrical charge due to gaining or losing electrons.
Covalent Bond
A type of chemical bond where electrons are shared between atoms.
Molecule
A compound formed when atoms share electrons, resulting in an electrically neutral particle.
Atom
The basic unit of chemistry.
Subatomic Particles
The three types of particles that compose an atom: protons, neutrons, and electrons.
Proton
A subatomic particle with a positive charge, located in the nucleus of an atom.
Neutron
A subatomic particle with a neutral charge, located in the nucleus of an atom.
Electron
A subatomic particle with a negative charge, located outside the nucleus of an atom.
Atomic Mass
The total number of protons and neutrons in an atom's nucleus.
Electrically Neutral Atom
An atom where the number of protons equals the number of electrons, resulting in no overall electrical charge.
Valence Shell
The outermost electron shell of an atom.
