Majority Party
The political party in a legislative body that has more members than any other party.
Minority Party
The political party in a legislative body that has fewer members than the majority party.
Speaker of the House
The presiding officer of the House of Representatives, responsible for overseeing legislative proceedings.
Majority Leader
The leader of the majority party in a legislative body, responsible for coordinating and scheduling the legislative agenda.
Caucus
A group of members of a legislative body who meet to discuss and promote shared interests.
Whip
A party leader in a legislative body who is responsible for ensuring party discipline and coordinating votes.
Committee Chair
A member of a committee who is responsible for leading the committee and directing its activities.
Party Unity Votes
Votes where a majority of members of one political party vote against a majority of members of another party.
Hastert Rule
A rule that states the Speaker will not bring a bill to the floor unless it has the support of a majority of the majority party.
Majority Whip
An official in a legislative body who assists the majority leader in managing the party’s legislative program.
President Pro Tempore
An honorific title for the senator of the majority party with the longest continuous service, who presides over the Senate in the absence of the Vice President.
Redistricting
The process of redrawing electoral district boundaries, often to benefit a particular party.
Caucus Chair
The member of a congressional party who communicates the views of the party to its rank-and-file members and vice versa.
Conference Committee
A committee formed to reconcile differences between the House and Senate versions of a bill.
Divided Government
A situation in which one party controls the presidency while another controls one or both houses of Congress.
Ideological Polarization
The increasing ideological differences and divisions between political parties.
Leadership Positions
Positions that hold authority and responsibility within a legislative body, such as Speaker, Majority Leader, and Minority Leader.
