Redox Reactions
Reduction and oxidation occurring together; oxidation is the loss of electrons, while reduction is the gain of electrons.
OILRIG
Acronym for "Oxidation Is Loss, Reduction Is Gain."
Electrolysis
Decomposition of ionic compounds by electric current; anions move to the anode, cations to the cathode.
Anode Reaction
Oxidation occurs at the anode; anions lose electrons and form new substances.
Cathode Reaction
Reduction occurs at the cathode; cations gain electrons and form new substances.
Electrolytes
Substances conducting electricity in water or molten state; dissociate into ions for current flow.
Half Equations
Representing reactions at electrodes during electrolysis.
Copper Chloride Electrolysis
Process where Cu2+ and Cl- ions are attracted to oppositely charged electrodes.
Aluminium Extraction
Aluminium extracted from bauxite through electrolysis in molten cryolite.
Copper Purification
Impure copper purified through electrolysis; impurities settle as "Anode sludge."
Electroplating
Deposition of a thin metal layer onto a surface through electrolysis.
Electroplating with Tin
Tin ions reduced at the cathode to form solid tin; tin metal oxidized at the anode.
