Type I Ionic Compound
Metal + Nonmetal
Metal goes first, nonmetals second
Nonmetals → add “-ide”
Type II Ionic Compounds
Metal can form diff cations (aka transition metals)
Indicate the charge of cation with roman numeral (ie: if +2 then write (II) )
add “-ic” for higher charge, & “-ous” for lower charge
(ie: Iron II → Ferric, Iron III → Ferrous)
Type III Covalent Compounds
1st element then 2nd element
use prefix to indicate # of atoms (ie: mono, di, tri, tetra, penta, hexa, hepta and octa)
Compounds with Polyatomic Ions
if combined with a nonmetal, use prefixes as usual
if combined with a metal with diff cations, use roman numeral
but LEAVE the polyatomic named as it is
