Is an area of London’d East End, just outside the City of London. During this period it was a place of inner-city poverty

An area filled with lodging houses in which some of London’s poorest people lived in terribly overcrowded conditions, often characterised by squalor and inadequate sanitation

A place where those unable to support themselves were offered accommodation and employment
