It happens when an individual interact, negotiate, and create meanings while bringing in their varied cultural backgrounds.

DENIAL
Based on the belief that a person's culture is the only real culture. Individual fails to see cultural differences and tends to isolate themselves from other groups.
DEFENSE
Feels as though their own culture is the only good culture and may feel threatened by other cultures and their differences. Tends to be critical and has a narrow focus on what's appropriate and correct
MINIMIZATION
Begins to find commonalities between themselves and people of other cultures, banking on the universality of ideas. Recognizes that all people are people despite differences.
ACCEPTANCE
Promotes belief that one's culture is just one of the many cultures in the world. Curiosity and desire to learn arise. Appreciates important cultural differences in behaviors and eventually in values. The more different we are the better!
ADAPTATION
Becoming more competent in how to communicate with people of other cultures. Now open to worldviews when accepting new perspectives. Have learned to see the world through another's eyes
INTEGRATION
