What is an Assessment?
A protocol, instrument, or tool used to make a measurement.
What is a Measurement
Results in a quantifiable outcome from an assessment.
Evaluation
Contrasts the measurement to provide a judgement or statement placing the outcome in context.
Fitness
A set of attributes or characteristics that are either health-related or performance-related.
Health-Related Fitness
Attributes that are related to mortality or morbidity.
Mortality
Related to the occurrence of death.
Morbidity
Related to the occurrence of illness.
Quality of Life
An individual’s perception in relation to their goals, expectations, standards, and concerns.
Components of Fitness
Can be health-related and skill-related, and may overlap.
What constitutes an Effective Assessment (8)
Is practical, variables measured are specific and relevant, assessment is valid and reliable, test administered at appropriate time and frequency, are standardized, professional, respects human rights, results are explained verbally and written form
Informed Consent
A basic human right where participants are fully informed about the assessment.
What Assessments Can Do
Provide objective measures of health and performance compared to peers, identify odds and chances of success based on comparable data and Identify ODDS or CHANCE of a particular health outcome based on known risk factors
What Assessments Can NOT Do
Provide absolute predictions related to health and fitness.
Performance related fitness
A fitness skill that may pertain to a sport, occupation, or daily living
