I speak English. With the verb “to speak” we simply say the language name without using article the. But in other verbs such as “understand” you need the article ‘the’ in front of the language name.

Désolée, je ne comprends pas l’anglais

Sorry, I do not understand (the) English. In French you use the article the in front of the language name after verb like understand.
