Adaptive immune system is a specific defense system that elimantes -
almost any pathogen or abnormal cell in body
Shortcoming:
must be primed by initial exposure to specific foreign substance
-when sick, already primed the system of getting sick again
Adaptive immune system does-
Amplifies inflammatory response
Activates complement
Two main branches of adaptive system -
Humoral (antibody-mediated) immunity
Cellular (cell-mediated) immunity
adaptive immunity characterists-
-recognizes and targets specific antigens
not restricted to initial site
mounts an even stronger attack to “known” antigens (second and subsequent exposures)
Humoral immunity (B-Cell Immunity)
B cells produced by lymphocytes
Bone marrow
antiBodies ( has extracellular targets)
2. Cellular Immunity (T-Cell Immunity)
T cells (directly killing targeted cells)
Thymus
Targets (has cellular targets
