“As natural and ghastly as a laugh in hell” chapter 35/36

+angel is turning into Alec, showing how basically men are shit because of how entrenched the patrichaty is into society.

2

“another woman in your shape”+ ‘a guilty woman in the guise of a innconcet one” chapter 35

+cos angel built up his entire perception of tess on the assumption she’s a virgin, he feels betrayed when she tells him about the rape/sorrow and this illustrates how angel is rly just a wolf in sheep’s clothing

+ao3: madonna whore dichotomy by freud. Tess was the madonna but now she’s a whore and angel’s myfsgony is shown by how easily he makes the shift bewteen the 2.

3

New cards

“He was no longer passion’s slave” chapter 35

+insuitantes that tess bewitched/lied to him despite fact that she tried to bring it up but angel actively shut the conversation down- showing how deeply indochated he is to the harmful, prejudiced faith he was raised in.

7
New cards

“she was already in the sitting room mechanically readjusting the breakfast things.” chapter 35/36

+she’s very passive and this only reinforces that. they’ve been together for long enough that caring for him has become habit/ routine so this emphasise Angel’s behaviour.

+also: evidence she’s from the old way of life and is being mechanised by angel therefore losing herself to the effects of industrislation ( Alec’s rape).

8
New cards

“She looked absolutely pure” chapter 35/36

+angel feels betrayed as he feels that she delibraty decieved him. women aren’t a monolith group and Angel assumes that a) they are and b)that you see if someone’s a virgin just by looking at them. shows how undeucadted he is.

+links to themes of reality vs image which is a WH link

+mysgony is so embedded into society that mrs Clare asks this as there’s a very real possibility that she thinks tess was raped.
