Informed consent
knowing enough about a study to decide whether you want to agree to participate
Right to withdraw
a participant should know they can remove themselves,and their data, from a study at anytime, if a participant wants to withdraw they can leave and erase their data along with it
Protection from harm
participants should not be put in more danger than they normally are in their daily routine
Deception
when a scientist lies to reduce demand characteristics, should be avoided
Privacy
participants should not be observed in places or situations they would not expect to be seen in
Confidentiality
keeping the participants personal information and results secret, not to be seen by anyone outside the experiment
Self report
a questionnaire or interview, type of research method which obtains data by asking the participants themselves
Questionnaire
TYPE of self report, uses written questions through a paper and pencil or online techniques
Inter-rater reliability
when 2 researchers agree on the same thing, only when they agree
Closed questions
questions that produce QUANTITATIVE data, questions with NO opportunity to expand on answers
Open ended questions
produces QUALITATIVE data, participants give detailed answers in their own words, no categories are given
Generalizability
how widely findings apply to other settings and populations
Social desirability
when someone presents themselves in the best light by responding in a way that would be most acceptable to other people
Filler questions
questions that are meant to throw off participants so they don't find the true meaning of the study and or change their behaviour accordingly
Interview
research method using verbal communication and questioning to find and acquire data
Structured interview
interview format with questions in a fixed order that may be scripted
Semi-structured interview
interview format with a fixed list of open and closed ended questions, the interviewer can add more questions if necessary, can also change the order of the questions
Non- structured interview
interview format where the next question asked depends on the participants previous answer, no scripted questions
Subjectivity
the personal perspective of someone, for example how they interpret data, should be without outside beliefs like religion
Objectivity
a way to interpret data without having any biased towards it like religion
Case study
research method where one person, family, or institution, is studied in detail
Triangulation
using multiple methods of research to in order to accurately observe an experiment,study, and or phenomenon (could be more)
