N1 stage
low amplitude, mostly high frequencies recorded by EEG
eyes close, muscles relax, core body temperature decreases
how long is N1 stage
1-7 minutes
what are hypnic jerks and what stage do they occur
hypnic jerks are sudden contractions of the muscles and they wake us up, sometimes accompanied by a sense of falling or tripping
it occurs in the N1 stage
N2 stage
characterized by the presence of phenomena on an EKG known as sleep spindles and K complexities, generated in the cortext
K complex involves waves that stand out from the rest of the EEG
eye movement stops, lower heart rate and body temp, muscles tense and relax, upper airways relax
what 2 stages involve drowsiness and light sleep
N1 and N2
N3 stage
known as the slow-wave sleep or deep sleep
Delta waves, which are low frequency and high amplitude waves make up at least 20% of brain activity
what stage is thought to be especially important for overall restfulness, most restorative, and essental for body’s recovery
N3
when does N3 stage occurs?
about 40 minutes after falling asleep
In what stage is muscles paralized
rem stage
which stage has the most vivid dreams, do we dream the most?
rem stage
rem stage
[person passes back through stage 2 and stage 1 before entering rapid eye movement (REM)
EEG activity resembles what’s seen in stage 1, restful waking
how long is the overall cycle of sleep
4-5 times/night
90-110 min
total 7-8 hours
what stage are sleep spindles In and what are they
N2
sleep spindles are 1-2 second bursts of activity and result from interactions between the thalamic and cortical neurons; essential for forming memories and remembering dreams
turn short term memories into long term
sleep spindles
what happens if woken up during N3?
person is groggy and mental performance will be slower for about 30 minutes b/c reduced cerbral blood flow
circadian rythim
our body’s internal clock; regulates body’s sleep and wake cycle
which of the stages was the longest?
N2
why is good sleep so important?
if well rested: enjoy health benefits if sufficient and efficient: through completion of each stage and multiple cycles
if not: fatigued, cognitive impairment, reduced immunity, impacted hormone production, changes in metabolism, reduced concentration & hand-eye coordination, daytime sleepiness, irritability
what do K complexities generated in the cortex help to do?
to not wake up
