Microbiology
A specialized area of biology that deals with living things ordinarily too small to be seen without magnification.
Pathogen
Any microbe that causes disease in humans or other organisms.
Eukaryote
An organism whose cells contain double-membrane-bound organelles, including a true nucleus.
Prokaryote
A cellular organism lacking a true nucleus, traditionally encompassing bacteria and archaea.
Akaryotes
An alternate term used for prokaryotes, meaning 'no nucleus'.
Archaea
Single-celled microorganisms lacking a true nucleus that are genetically and metabolically distinct from bacteria.
Virus
An acellular particle composed of a small amount of DNA or RNA surrounded by a protein coat, and sometimes a membrane.
Prion
An acellular infectious agent simpler than a virus, containing no nucleic acid and composed entirely of protein.
Anoxygenic Photosynthesis
Light-fueled conversion of carbon dioxide to organic material in bacteria that occurred before plants evolved and did not produce oxygen.
Oxygenic Photosynthesis
Photosynthesis evolved from anoxygenic photosynthesis that produces oxygen, carried out by photosynthetic microorganisms responsible for 70% of Earth's photosynthesis.
Biotechnology
The manipulation of microorganisms, plants, and animals for the purpose of creating new products and genetically modified organisms (GMOs).
Recombinant DNA Technology
Technology that makes it possible to transfer genetic material from one organism to another to deliberately alter DNA.
Bioremediation
The use of microbes already present or intentionally introduced to restore stability or clean up toxic pollutants.
Theory of Evolution
A testable, well-studied natural phenomenon describing the accumulation of changes that occur in organisms as they adapt to their environments.
Spontaneous Generation
The belief that invisible vital forces present in nonliving matter led to the creation of life.
Biogenesis
The principle stating that living things arise only from pre-existing living things of their same kind.
Pasteur's Swan-Neck Flask Experiment
An experiment by Louis Pasteur demonstrating that boiled sterile broth remains sterile unless exposed to airborne microbes trapped in the curved neck.
Pasteurization
The process of heating food or liquids to kill harmful microbes and reduce spoilage without fully sterilizing them.
Endospore
A heat-resistant structure produced by certain bacteria, discovered and described by Ferdinand Cohn.
Germ Theory of Disease
The principle that human diseases can be caused by infection with specific microorganisms.
Koch's Postulates
A series of logical steps established by Robert Koch to determine whether an organism is pathogenic and which specific disease it causes.
Restriction Enzymes
Molecular enzymes discovered by Daniel Nathans, Werner Arber, and Hamilton Smith that chop up DNA at specific target sequences.
Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR)
A breakthrough molecular technique that amplifies tiny amounts of DNA into quantities large enough for detailed study.
Monomer
A simple molecule that serves as a building block subunit for larger macromolecules.
Polymer
A large molecule composed of repeating chains of monomer subunits.
Monosaccharide
A simple 3- to 7-carbon sugar molecule such as glucose or fructose.
Disaccharide
A carbohydrate composed of two monosaccharide units bonded together, such as maltose, lactose, or sucrose.
Polysaccharide
A carbohydrate polymer composed of long chains of monosaccharides, functioning in structural support or energy storage.
Peptidoglycan
A main structural component of the bacterial cell wall made of repeating polysaccharide chains linked by short peptides.
Lipopolysaccharide
A complex molecule containing lipid and polysaccharide components found in the outer membrane of gram-negative bacterial cell walls.
Glycocalyx
A protective outer layer on the cell surface that plays a key role in cell attachment to surfaces or other cells.
Triglyceride
A lipid storage molecule formed by esterifying a single glycerol molecule with three fatty acid chains.
Saturated Fatty Acid
A fatty acid chain with no double bonds between carbon atoms, saturated with hydrogen.
Unsaturated Fatty Acid
A fatty acid chain containing one or more double bonds between carbon atoms.
Amphipathic
Describing a molecule that possesses both polar (hydrophilic) and nonpolar (hydrophobic) regions.
Phospholipid
A membrane lipid consisting of glycerol, two fatty acid tails, and a charged phosphate head group.
Steroid
A complex ringed lipid molecule found in cell membranes and animal hormones, such as cholesterol.
Wax
An ester formed between a long-chain alcohol and a saturated fatty acid, providing waterproofing.
Peptide
A molecule composed of short chains of amino acids linked together.
Polypeptide
A chain of amino acids usually containing more than 20 amino acids, forming a subunit of a protein.
Primary Structure
The specific sequence of amino acids in a polypeptide chain linked by peptide bonds.
Secondary Structure
The localized folding of a protein chain into structures such as alpha-helixes and beta-pleated sheets.
Tertiary Structure
The overall three-dimensional shape of a folded polypeptide chain held together by covalent and noncovalent interactions.
Quaternary Structure
The complex protein structure formed when two or more independent polypeptide chains interact.
Native State
The functional, correctly folded three-dimensional shape of a protein.
Denaturation
The disruption of a protein's native three-dimensional structure caused by agents such as heat, acid, alcohol, or disinfectants.
Nucleotide
The monomer building block of nucleic acids, consisting of a pentose sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogenous base.
Deoxyribonucleic Acid (DNA)
A double-stranded nucleic acid containing deoxyribose sugar and thymine that stores an organism's genetic master code.
Ribonucleic Acid (RNA)
A nucleic acid containing ribose sugar and uracil that functions in expressing genetic information to build proteins.
Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)
A high-energy nucleotide containing adenine, ribose, and three phosphate groups that releases energy for cellular processes when phosphate bonds break.
Taxonomy
The formal science of organizing, classifying, and naming living things, developed by Carl Von Linné.
Nomenclature
The standardized system of assigning scientific names to various taxonomic categories and individual organisms.
Binomial System of Nomenclature
The system of naming organisms using a combination of a capitalized Genus name and a lowercase species name.
Phylogeny
A taxonomic scheme representing the natural relatedness and evolutionary history between groups of living beings.
