Character and narration (AP Lit)

Archetype

A typical character, an action, or a situation that seems to represent universal patterns of human nature.  An archetype may be a character, theme, symbol, or setting.

Dynamic Character

A character who changes over the course of a narrative.

Static Character

A character who remains unchanged or is largely unaffected by the events of a narrative.

 Protagonist

The main character in a narrative.

Antagonist

Opposes the protagonist and may be another character, the internal conflicts of the protagonist, a collective (such as society), or nature.

Foil

A character who illuminates, through contrast, the traits, attributes, or values of another character.

Narrative Distance

The physical distance, chronological distance, relationships, or emotional

 investment of the narrator to the events or characters of the narrative.

Perspective

How narrators, characters, or speakers see their circumstances.
