Development
The process of differentiation as plants progress through stages of their life cycle.
Germination
The process by which a seed develops into a new plant.
Growth
The irreversible increase in weight or size of an organism due to an increase in number and size of cells.
Imbibition
The absorption of water by the seed through the seed coat.
Seed Dormancy
The failure of a seed to germinate when all required environmental conditions are met.
Metabolic processes
Chemical reactions that occur within a plant to maintain life, including respiration and energy production.
Oxygen
A gas necessary for many metabolic processes, especially respiration in plants.
Temperature
A factor affecting metabolic processes and reactions, crucial for seed germination.
Epigeal germination
A type of seed germination where the cotyledons emerge above the soil surface.
Hypogeal germination
A type of seed germination where the cotyledons remain below the soil surface.
Coleoptile
A protective sheath that covers the emerging shoot in monocot seeds.
Scutellum
A specialized cotyledon in monocot seeds that aids in nutrient absorption.
After-ripening
Further development of the embryo involving biochemical changes necessary for germination.
