lincoln, douglas, bell, breckinridge
lincoln (republican)
Eventual winner. He won out almost every state in the North. Stood for preventing the westward expansion of slavery.
douglas (democrat)
One of the two Democrat candidates. He didn't get very many votes compared to the others. Stood for popular sovereignty on the issue of slavery.
breckinridge (democrat)
Represented the interests of the deep south, and got several votes in that region.
bell (constitutional union)
A candidate who said that he and his party would simply leave the issue alone, and won states along the border of the North and South
