Communis
The Latin term meaning 'common', from which the word 'communication' originates.
Communication (Carl Hovland)
The process by which an individual (the communicator) transmits stimuli (usually verbal symbols) to modify the behavior of the other individuals (communicates).
Communication (Seiler and Beall, 2005)
The sharing and creation of meaning through symbolic interaction.
Communication (Sulaiman Masri, 1997)
A process in which a message is transmitted from a sender to a receiver through a particular channel, followed by feedback.
Communication Competence (Rodiah Idris, 2010)
Involves the ability to provide feedback, present ideas orally and in writing, make presentations, and negotiate in order to achieve particular goals and obtain support or agreement.

Process (Characteristic of Communication)
Refers to communication being continuous and dynamic rather than a single event.
Irreversible (Characteristic of Communication)
Refers to the fact that once a message has been communicated, it cannot literally be withdrawn.
Source / Sender
The individual, group, or institution that initiates a message.
Encoding
The process of transforming an idea, thought, or feeling into symbols that can be communicated.
Message
The content of the communication and what the communicator intends to communicate.
Context
The circumstances or situation surrounding communication that determines its form and meaning.
Channel
The medium through which a message is communicated and delivered.
Receiver
The person or group for whom the message is intended.
Decoding
The process of interpreting the symbols contained in a message and assigning meaning to them.
Feedback
The response of the receiver to the sender.
Allowance
A regular amount provided for personal expenses.
Grant
Money provided for a specific purpose, often by an institution or government.
Remittance
Money sent, often by someone working away from home, to relatives or others.
Bribe
Money or another benefit offered or given improperly to influence someone's actions.
