hypothesis

8HQ antimicrobial activity is enhanced in the presence of Cu both in vitro and in vivo

  1. In vitro: experiments performed outside a living organism (“in glass”, lab conditions)

In vivo: experiments conducted inside living organisms (“in life” animal experiment)

Can the antimicrobial activity of 8-hydroxyquinoline (8HQ) be enhanced by copper?

background

Mycobacteria tuberculosis (mTB): bacteria that causes tuberculosis

mTB growth phases

  • Growing: actively replicating bacterial cells

  • Recovery: dormant, non-replicating bacteria

  • Scientists can generate recovery non-replicating mTB cells by starving them. Then test efficacy of antibiotic 8HQ against dormant cells
