Egyptian Hieroglyphs
A pictographic writing system using pictures and symbols, used for religious texts, government records, monuments, and commercial information.
Pictographic
A form of writing based on pictures or symbols, which was the original form of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Hieratic
A simplified form of hieroglyphs that was easier and faster for everyday writing.
Meroitic Writing
A writing system developed by Nubians whose sounds scholars have determined, though the language itself has not been deciphered.
Amon
A major Egyptian deity associated with the sun, creation, and fertility.
Re
A major Egyptian sun god associated with Heliopolis.
Amon-Re
The combined entity of two major Egyptian gods, Amon and Re.
Akhenaten
An Egyptian figure who promoted Aten as the one true god, seeking to replace the traditional worship of Amon-Re with monotheism.
Aten
The god promoted by Akhenaten as the one true god in a monotheistic system.
Monotheism
The belief in ONE god.
Mummification
The practice of preserving the dead, grounded in the Egyptian belief that death is not the end of existence and that people could have life after death.
