Power
The capacity of a person, team, or organization to influence others and change attitudes and behavior.
Countervailing Power
The capacity of a person, team, or organization to keep a more powerful person or group in the exchange relationship.
Legitimate Power
Power given based on compliance; derived from a person's specific role that allows them to request certain behaviors.
Zone of Indifference
The range of behaviors individuals defer to authority without question.
Reward Power
The ability to control rewards valued by others and remove negative sanctions.
Coercive Power
The ability to apply punishment to others.
Referent Power
Influence over others through identification with and respect for the power holder, often associated with charisma.
Expert Power
The capacity to influence others by possessing knowledge or skills that they value.
Substitutability
The availability of alternatives impacting the level of power; more power when few or no alternatives exist.
Centrality
The degree and nature of interdependence with the power-holder, affecting their power position.
Visibility
How known a power holder is regarding their valued resources, increasing their influence.
Discretion
The freedom to exercise judgment; rules can limit the degree of discretion.
Social Capital
Goodwill and resulting resources shared among members in a social network.
Strong Ties
Close-knit relationships characterized by frequent interaction and high sharing.
Weak Ties
Acquaintances that offer unique resources not held by you or others in your network.
Resistance
Opposition to the behavior desired by the influencer.
Compliance
Motivated implementation of a request due to external sources such as rewards.
Commitment
High motivation to implement a request due to identification with the influencer.
Organizational Politics
Behaviors perceived as self-serving tactics for personal gain at the expense of others and possibly the organization.
Empowerment
The ability of employees to make decisions and commitments, granting them control and responsibility.
Workplace Bullying
Harassment occurring across organizational levels or among coworkers, leading to adverse effects on well-being.
Sexual Harassment
Unwelcome behavior of a sexual nature in the workplace that negatively impacts the work environment.
